Karl Strauss Amber Lager

Karl Strauss Amber Lager

While visiting San Diego I decided one night to go get some beer and came across the Karl Strauss Amber Lager. I know there are lots of breweries in San Diego, but with both kids, this was the best I could do.

Anyway, they brewery is located in San Diego at:

5985 Santa Fe St San Diego, CA 92109

They have a Carlsbad location as well.

There website is http://www.karlstrauss.com/

Now on to the review.

Aroma

The aroma was very toasty and malty. There was also a a slight butterscotch aroma that was buried underneath. Not enough to really affect the beer, but I did notice it.

Appearance

The appearance include a nice creamy head with a rich amber color. The head retention was moderate and seemed perfectly to style.

Flavor

The Flavor was a little surprising with huge caramel notes up front that gradually turned to slight bitterness. It was definitely a malt forward flavor profile.

Mouth feel

It had a medium body that turned to a surprisingly crisp  and dry finish.

Overall

This beer certainly should not be confused with a Vienna lager, and it was a little light for a dunkel. Still, this is a very nice amber lager, especially for those who like malty beers, and I do.

I would buy this again.

40/50 is my score.
