Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout (TimShel)

This oatmeal stout recipe is a great for beginning home brewers as well as more advanced home brewers.

Oatmeal stout is a type of stout that includes up to 20% oats. This contributes to a silky and smooth finish that some describe as oily as well.

Popular in late 19th century England, oatmeal stout was considered a healthy brew that provided nourishment. The style all but died out in the middle of the 20th century, although Michael Jackson mentioned it in his seminal book The World Guide to Beer (out of print). This prompted the commissioning of a new version of the style from the Samuel Smith brewery in Yorkshire, England (Oliver, 2012).

Food Pairing:

Breakfast of course! Also makes a good desert beer with it roasty coffee notes and hints of choclate along with the background notes of the oatmeal.
