Palisade® YC4 (hop)
The Palisade hop is a modern US hop that is bred by Yakima Chief Ranches. It is primarily bred for its aroma, but has been used as a flavor and bittering hop as well. It is a cross between a Tettnanger and open pollination. Some have suggested Willamette as a substitute, but other brewers have suggested using one of the German noble hops.
The aroma of Palisade hops shows its German heritage, and most brewers comment that it is rather floral with some grassiness. Some brewers have also noted an apricot aroma. The bitterness is very smooth, and even though this hop was bred for aroma, it is very good at adding bitterness and flavor.
Palisade has an alpha acid range of 5.5 – 9.0% and beta acids are 6.0 – 8.0%, thus contributing to the “soft” bittering character. Humulene ranges from 19 – 22% and cohumulone is 24-29%. Palisade has no Farnesene.
Palisade matures mid season. It is a very vigorous growing hop and is resistant to Podoshaera (powdery mildew) and downey mildew. Palisade has good storability according to early storage trials. It has a medium cone and is easy to pick
