Pilsner Urquell Review

What I have in my beer stained hands is some Pilsner Urquell. It comes in green bottles, but if there’s one thing that I hate, it’s green bottle beer. So why am I showing you this? Because you’ll notice the box is completely sealed, even the parts where these two grocery store handlers usually ruin it. I happened to find one, so I’m going to buy it and drink it tonight. What are we going to drink it with? Well, it’s spring time in Las Vegas. A little breeze blowing in the back. I’ve got some noisy kids in my Jacuzzi, but we’re going to do some barbecuing.

Then, we’re going to drink a little beer and do a little tasting, but Pilsner Urquell a little spicy, one of the original Czech Pilsner’s, and it will go just great with hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans and whatever else we end up cooking for the night.

Alright, so here we go. As I said, it is in a green bottle. Leave this out for about an hour and it will end up nice and skunky for you. But what we’re going to do is open it up and pour it into a glass.

The Pilsner Urquell review

Okay, so here we go with the tasting. We got a nice golden color, which is acceptable. Head retention is a little low, but I was trying not to get as many bubbles as possible. Alright, so this was a golden color. A little head retention on it, but I didn’t pour it hard to try and get that out. I really want to drink this. Carbonation seems very goo. We shall try it right now, and I’ll let you know how it goes without the skunk, of course.

I have some allergies, so it’s hard to get any nose on it when it is cold, but I’ll give you what I can. I need to let it warm up a bit. I get some definite spicy hop aroma, which is what you expect. I get a character of almost water. It’s different than the German water because it doesn’t have the minerals, but you still get that softness and the bouquet of the hops. I get a tiny bit of malt, but not much.

For the flavor, the first thing that hits me is the carbonic bites followed by some of the hop spiciness that I feel. Nice tingling on the front of my tongue. Going to the back, I get some of the bittering, which you can’t really taste, but you can always tell. It usually hits you in the back. For the after taste on this, I’m definitely getting a nice balance to the hop, but there is some malt, some breadiness coming up.

Alright, so we’re continuing our tasting here. I’m going to get a little more aroma since it’s warmed up a hair. I am getting a little more maltiness. The hop aroma kind of went away, which is to be expected. What little bit of head retention there is still there. Certainly wouldn’t call it a lot, but you definitely have plenty of carbonation in this beer. As it warms up, I’m getting more malt, which is to be expected, but I’m still getting that balance to the hop and it’s a spicy hop. It’s almost between the earth of an English hop and the floral of a German noble hop, but it’s really kind of its own thing.

As far as the mouth feel on it, it’s pretty much a medium/medium-light refreshing summer beer that’s going to go great with the barbecue tonight. My overall impression when you get them that aren’t skunky, this is one of the classic beer styles of the world. I highly recommend it. You can get it in a keg or a can. Same thing. If it’s in a green bottle and it’s been out, use it to cook with or throw it away or give it to your friends that don’t really like beer. Then you’ll have a reason for them to not like beer.

Alright, that’s our taste for the day. Have a nice spring or if you’re on the other side of the world, I guess it’s turning to fall right now.
