From the Founder (Istvan Akos):
Why did you decide to start a brewery?
My three partners and I was founded Unser Bier in 1998 as an answer to the global concentration of the beer market. Before we came on the market, Basel had a population of 180,000 and there was only one small brewery. There was a beer vacuum here in Basel. It all started with an exhibit at the spring MUBA fair. We rented a large booth and we showed people how they could brew their own beer at home. We proposed to teach 4 home-brewing courses with spaces for 40 people and we had 210 registrations!
We realized we had something. First, we founded an Unser Bier club, a place where people could come and brew beer as a hobby. Then we decided
to found the brewery.
How many different beers do you produce?
We produce four different beers and occasional specials. Our first beer was an Amber beer. We wanted to produce a beer that is quite different from the usual lager beers served in Basel. Amber is also a lager but it is not hopped; it is not bitter. Women who usually don’t like beer tend to like it.
Our next beer was a pale beer, called Blond. It’s a little more bitter than the Amber. It’s a man’s beer. Our third beer was a black beer called Schwarz. It appeals to both men and women. We had some Irish people here recently and I told them that our black beer is just like Guinness but a little bit better. They were very upset about that. Weizen, wheat beer, is our fourth.
Hours
The Unser Bier brewery pub is open to the public on Thursday and Friday evenings from 17:00 – 20:00 and is available for private parties and brew fests the rest of the week. Zum Wohl!
